Travel Trailer Camping Tips
Planning a camping trip with your travel trailer can be both exciting and overwhelming. There is a lot to plan and remember before you set out on your trip. However, with these helpful tips, your next adventure will be made easier and more fun.
Parking and Campsite Setup
When you arrive at your campsite, look for a patch of level ground to park your travel trailer. RV parks will have a concrete pad for this purpose, but if you’re staying at a more rustic campground you may need to scout around to find a good spot. Chocks, leveling blocks, and a spirit level can help you level out your trailer. With your trailer settled into place, it’s time for the fun part! Extend your awning and slideouts, set up your folding chairs, and fire up your BBQ.
Water Usage
There are two ways to use your travel trailer’s plumbing system. When staying at a campground with utility hookups, you can connect your pipes directly to the municipal water system for a plentiful source of freshwater. Camping without hookups (also known as “dry camping”) means relying on your trailer’s fresh water tank, which means you’ll want to conserve water as much as possible. Take fewer, shorter showers, and use hand sanitizer to clean your hands. You can also keep bottled water on hand as a backup supply.
Keep in mind that your greywater and blackwater tanks will need to be emptied regularly at a designated dumping station. These tanks should also be cleaned after each trip. Consult your owner’s manual for instructions on how to maintain your plumbing system.
On and Off-Grid Power Options
Your travel trailer’s electrical system can either run on propane or be hooked up to the power grid. Some modern trailers also come equipped with solar panels for harvesting renewable energy. Using the grid makes you vulnerable to power outages, so it’s a good idea to install a surge protector.
Unless you have solar panels, propane will be your only power source when dry camping. Make sure to bring plenty of fuel, and use it wisely. The best way to conserve electricity is to minimize the use of your heating and cooling systems.
