No one likes to think about the more mundane tasks of RV ownership, but the truth is that they’re important to do because they help your RV last longer and make it a nicer and more comfortable place to stay. One of those mundane tasks is to clean your RV bathroom. While the process is similar to how you might clean your bathroom at home, there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure you do this correctly, especially since your RV’s toilet flushes into a holding tank and not a city sewer system.

47 West Trailers, located in Troy, is your Missouri RV dealer. Here are five RV bathroom cleaning tips to help you get your bathroom spic and span.

1. Use the Right Chemicals

There are a number of products on the market that are designed to help neutralize odors in your RV’s toilet and break down solid waste to make trips to the dump station easier. Use these chemicals every time you empty your tanks.

2. Don’t Forget the TP

You can’t use standard two-ply plush toilet papers in your RV’s toilet because they will not break down correctly and may end up clogging your toilet, which you definitely don’t want when you’re out in the middle of nowhere! Get special RV toilet paper that will dissolve quickly and use it judiciously; this will mean demonstrating to guests and especially children the right amount of paper to use.

3. Dump Your Tank

The blackwater tank in your RV that holds your toilet waste needs to be emptied on a regular basis, generally when it’s about three-fourths full (it won’t flow as well otherwise). Don’t leave the sewer connection open at a campground, either; use the holding tank as it was intended. Make sure to rinse out the tank when you’re done.

4. Scrub Toilet Gently

Wiping down the inside of your toilet is necessary on an RV toilet because you can’t use a scrub-brush and caustic toilet cleaner like you would at home. Wear rubber gloves and use paper towels to wipe down the bowl, then dispose of the towels in the trash. Try to do this once every few weeks at least, if not more often.

5. Wipe Down Shower & Counter

You’ll also need to regularly wipe down the walls of your shower with an RV bathroom cleaning solution to prevent mold, mildew and soap scum from building up. At least once a week, wipe down the sink and mirror (you can use standard glass cleaner here) to give your bathroom a sparkly shine. Gentler chemicals are best for the surfaces in your RV bathroom. Sweep and mop floors as needed.
